BELHAVEN — Wednesday evening, firefighters and EMS personnel responded to a boat fire in Belhaven.

The couple who own the boat made it off safely, but their pet dog was lost in the fire, according to eyewitness reports. The couple was from Florida and sailing up the Intracoastal Waterway. Their names remain unknown.

According to witnesses, firefighters had difficulty moving their equipment to the boat, as it was moored in the creek when it caught fire.

“We can see it. It’s terrible!” resident Doug Grizzard wrote Wednesday on social media.

By about 10:30 p.m., paramedic Doug Mercer Jr., with Beaufort County EMS, reported the scene to be “under control.”

Belhaven Fire Chief Paul Wood could not be reached for comment Thursday.

There is no word on what caused the fire.
