Mr. Elvin Wesley Spruill, 79, of Roper, died Sunday, February 18, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Born June 6, 1927 in Washington County, he was the son of the late H. Cisero and Rennie Mann Spruill and was preceded in death by his sisters, Myrtle S. Simpson, Carolyn S. Newberry and Polly S. Omohundro; brothers, Caswell Spruill, J.C. Spruill and Carlton Spruill; son-in-laws, Jimmie Whitfield and John Stancil. Mr. Spruill was a retired recovery boiler operator with Weyerhaeuser Corporation, a gentleman farmer and member of Roper Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Perseverance Lodge No. 59 AF &AM and The Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 281.
His family includes his wife, Edna Furlough Spruill of Roper, N.C.; daughters, Kathy S. Whitfield of Hurdle Mills, N.C., Sandy S. Crumpler and husband Jack of Va. Beach, Va., Aida S. Stancil of Garner, N.C., and Cindy Spruill of Roper, N.C.; sisters, Ida S. Furlough of Creswell, N.C. and Barbara “Bobbie” S. Knowles of Va. Beach, Va.; brother, David Spruill of Jacksonville, Florida; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the Roper Baptist Church with Rev. Howard Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 20, 2007, from 7-9 p.m. at Roper Baptist Church and other times at the residence. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
