If the Washington Pam Pack is going to have more games like this, first-year coach Darin Vaughn is going to be a happy man.
The Pack won its baseball opener Thursday night, taking a 10-0 win over the Jones Senior Trojans at Futrell Field. The game ended in the sixth because of the 10-run rule.
Vaughn came up on the winning end in his coaching debut for the Pack (1-0), which plays at Jones Senior (0-1) on March 10.
Austin Thompson led Washington’s nine-hit attack by going a perfect 4-for-4. Thompson banged out a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.
Of the Pack’s nine hits, six went for extra bases. Trent Whitehead went 2-for-4 with a double and triple, while Billy Craig was 2-for-2 with a double.
Three Washington pitchers limited the Trojans to three hits. Starter Graham Fulcher (1-0) got the win, allowing two hits and striking out seven in three innings of work.
Josh Woolard went two innings and struck out three while walking four. Dean Smith pitched the final inning, surrendering one hit with one strikeout and one walk.
The Pack jumped on Jones Senior starter Robbie Scott for five runs in the first. Whitehead led off with a triple into the gap in left-center field.
Lee Watkins followed by smashing an RBI-double into left. Thompson followed with a double of his own, scoring Watkins for a quick 2-0 lead. Jeffrey Boyd was hit by a pitch and Billy Craig walked to load the bases.
Thompson and Boyd scored on passed balls. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Fulcher plated Craig to cap the first-inning scoring, giving the Pack a 5-0 lead.
Scott ended up pitching four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Washington added another run in the fourth. Christopher Everette reached on an error and would later trot home on a passed ball for a 6-0 advantage.
Washington ended the game with four runs in the sixth. Everette drew a leadoff walk and Whitehead reached on an error. Everette later scored on a wild pitch. After Watkins walked, Thompson laced his fourth hit of the game, a single into left that plated two more runs for a 9-0 lead.
After the Pack loaded the bases, David Tyson drew a walk that forced in Thompson with the tenth run.
