Mrs. Mary Catherine Millard of the Sidney Crossroads area, Belhaven, died May 11, 2007 at Pungo District Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Saint Mary, as she was known, was born March 8, 1934 in Allentown, PA. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Francis Gaughan and Mary Brown Gaughan. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Robert Farrell and her special aunt, Alice Brown.
Mary is survived by her husband of 54 years, George Wayne Millard, United States Navy Retired. Together Mary and George raised six devoted children: Wayne Thomas Millard of Elizabeth City, Kathryn Mary Winberry and husband Ed of Bear Creek, Linda Marie Farrell, widow of Robert Farrell of Norfolk, VA, Elizabeth Ann Hughes and husband Ed of Norfolk, VA, Michael Patrick Millard of Front Royal VA, and Carol Eileen McEwen of Norfolk, VA.
Mary Kay graduated from Allentown Catholic High School in Allentown, PA and Bethlehem Business College. She worked as a private secretary in the financial industry until she met and married George and became a dedicated Navy wife. For the next 25 years of George’s 29 year Navy career, the Millards traveled from duty station to duty station and were blessed with six children. They retired to Sidney Crossroads where they have resided for the past 17 years.
Nanny and Poppop, as they were known to their eight grandchildren, were fortunate to live near their Irish angels: Michael David Dassau, now serving in the U.S. Navy, of Silverdale, WA, Rebecca Ann Dassau and fiance Lucas Grant of Bear Creek NC, Meagan Elizabeth, Mary Katelyn and Hannah Marie Farrell of Norfolk, VA, Ryan Wayne McEwen and Madelyn Anne McEwen of Norfolk, VA, and Sarah Margaret Millard of Front Royal, VA.
Mary also leaves behind three brothers, Thomas, William, and her twin Richard Gaughan all of Pennsylvania, her aunt Helen Tomasko of N. Arlington, NJ, her friend and guardian angel Clemenstine Jones of Pantego as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Friends, family and loved ones will gather Tuesday, May 15th at 2 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home, Belhaven for a Celebration of her life. Following this brief ceremony, everyone is invited to the Millard home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Mary’s name to Tom Craigens at American Cancer Society’s McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge, 930-A Wellness Drive, Greenville, N.C. 27834. Also, contributions can be made to the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 628 E. 12th Street, Washington, N.C. 27889, directed by Dr. Jennie Crews, to whom the family will always be eternally grateful.
The family also wishes to express a special heartfelt debt of gratitude to the professional staff and employees of Pungo District Hospital for the loving care they provided to their mother and family on many, many occasions. A special note of thanks to Dr. Greg Jones, Dr. Mark Beamer and their wonderful staff.
