Mr. Hilton Ottis Chesson, Sr., 94, of Creswell, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at his residence.
Born March 26, 1913 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Alpheus and Eloise Swanner Chesson and was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Merle Norman Chesson; son, Roy F. Alexander, Jr.; sister, Sadie C. Stillman; brothers, Roland Chesson, Dallas Chesson and Kenneth Chesson. An outstanding member of his community, Mr. Chesson served as Fire Chief for 24 years of the Creswell Volunteer Fire Department, which he helped found in 1957. Around that same time, he began an ambulance service in Creswell that exists today. He was co-owner with his wife of Creswell Sales and Service from 1957 thru 1975. Mr. Chesson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, member of Providence Lodge No. 678, and the American Legion Post 391. He served as Magistrate of Washington County for 34 years, and was one of seven incorporators of Roanoke Bible College in 1948, where he served on the Board of Trustees from 1960 to 1991. He was an active member of Scuppernong Church of Christ and held many offices in the church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all.
His family includes his sons, Hilton Ottis Chesson, Jr. and wife Freda of Durham, N.C. and Michael N. Chesson and wife Darlene of Va. Beach, Va.; daughter-in-law, Corinthia Alexander of Apex, N.C.; sister, Ola C. Patrick of Plymouth, N.C.; brother, Gordon Chesson of Roper, N.C.; nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Friday, June 8, 2007 at 11 a.m. in the Scuppernong Church of Christ with Larry Woodley, George Bondurant and Frank Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors and full Masonic Rites. Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 7, 2007 from 7-9 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roanoke Bible College, 715 Poindexter Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or Roanoke Home Care Hospice, 198 N.C. Hwy. 45 North, Plymouth, NC 27962. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
