Mrs. Willer Minor Whitfield Spencer, 96, of 254 Juniper Bay Road, Swan Quarter, died Thursday, July 12, 2007, at home.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Old Richmond Missionary Baptist Church, Swan Quarter, with the Rev. Reginald Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhill Cemetery.
Mrs. Spencer was born in Hyde County on Oct. 29, 1910. She was the daughter of the late Fannie Whitfield Spencer and Thomas Whitaker. She attended the Hyde County Schools. She was married to Lafayette Spencer, who preceded her in death. She worked for many years as a chef in various restaurants in Manteo. She was a member of Old Richmond Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in the Willing Workers, as church cook, women’s auxiliaries, senior citizen’s club, Hyde County seniors programs, the deacon and trustee union and was a former choir member.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Merrick of Forestville, Md., Georgia Mae Spencer of Norfolk, Va., and Janie Cradle of Swan Quarter; two sons, Elbert Spencer of Columbia, and Kenneth Simmons of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Otis Spencer of Long Island, N.Y.; one sister, Doris Murray of New York; 28 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bonner St., Washington.
