Grover Stanley Woolard Jr. , age 71, went to be with the Lord July 19, 2007. He was predeceased by his parents, Grover Stanley Woolard Sr. and Ruby Whitaker Woolard; and a sister, Muriel Woolard Clark.
Grover “Stan” Woolard was born in Washington, N.C. and served four years in the U. S. Navy. Upon discharge, he and his beloved wife, Betty, settled in Richmond and shared 51 years of marriage and raised a family that he loved more than life itself.
Stan worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Virginia Tractor Company, later known as Carter Machinery, for 37 years, and loved what he did. “Stan the Man” was a mentor to others as he was an expert mechanic.
Stan was instrumental in getting the Bonnie Brae Church of Christ started and a building built. He served as deacon and treasurer for many years.
Stan’s retirement came earlier than he hoped due to medical complications. For many years he faced failing health with determination, never giving up hope. Even in the bleakest times he kept two gardens, a beautiful lawn and managed his family farm back in North Carolina. Outdoors is where he longed to be. He could always be counted on to engage in the latest political debate (foreign or domestic), and he believed every job was better tackled with just the right tool.
Celebrating his life are his wife, Betty Hardison Woolard; son, Grover S. Woolard III and wife, Janet; daughter, Sherry Woolard Black and husband, Dave; grandsons, Jake and Adam Black; sister, Doris Woolard Godley; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and longtime friends.
The family will receive friends at Bliley’s – Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. A service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Bonnie Brae Church of Christ. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bonnie Brae Church of Christ, 7610 Staples Mill Rd., Richmond, Va. 23228.
