Mr. Robert Michael Tarkington, Sr., 74, of Creswell, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital of Greenville.
Born April 28, 1933 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Clyde T. and Narcissus Phelps Tarkington and was preceded in death by his son, Michael Tarkington, Jr.; sisters, Eugene Alice Tarkington and Ruth T. Chesson; brother, Clyde J. Tarkington. Mr. Tarkington was a retired road maintenance supervisor with the N.C. Department Of Transportation and member of Philippi Church of Christ. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and member of The American Legion Post 391.
His family includes his wife, Margaret Basnight Tarkington of Creswell, N.C.; daughters, Shirley T. Pelletier and husband Keith of Creswell, N.C. and Joy Tarkington of Orlando, Fla.; sister, Rosalind T. Mitzke of Edenton, N.C.; brothers, S. B. Tarkington, Roy E. Tarkington, Carl B. Tarkington all of Creswell, N.C. and Albert B. Tarkington of Enfield, N.C.; grandsons, Andrew Pelletier and William Michael Tarkington.
Funeral service will be held Monday, March 3, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Philippi Church of Christ, Creswell with Glenn Brickhouse, Thomas Biggs, Larry Woodley and Keith Pelletier officiating. Burial will follow in the Tarkington Family Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2, 2008 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
