Edith J. Duke

As the sun was setting on March 16, 2008, Edith Inez Jefferson Duke, age 69, of Washington, N.C. passed away with her family by her side.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Rev. Barbara Chaffee. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Troy Phelps, J. R. Collins, Jim Jefferson, Swindell Braddy, Larry Lang and Earl Braddy will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Duke was born in Beaufort County on May 28, 1938, daughter of the late Grady Jefferson and the late Evelyn Braddy Jefferson. She was a 1956 graduate of Chocowinity High School. Mrs. Duke married Golden Odell Duke in September of 1956 who preceded her in death on November 23, 1983. She was the original owner of E-Dell’s Beauty Shop. She also worked at WITN-TV and managed various retail stores including Catherine’s and the Betsy Ross Store. She was most recently employed as a teller with Cooperative Bank. Mrs. Duke was a member of the Zion Episcopal Church and a past member of the Washington Singles Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Tammy Duke Lee and her husband Leo of Grimesland and her two grandchildren, Brittany Golden Apple and Brentley Speight Lee; her nephew, Jim Jefferson and his wife Becky; and two very special friends, Mary Noe and Judith Collins. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Loris “Jeff” Taylor Jefferson and James “J.T.” Thadeus Jefferson.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home and other times at the home of Tammy and Leo Lee, 259 Farmington Road, Grimesland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Beaufort County Humane Society, PO Box 8, Washington, NC 27889.
