Helen Brickhouse Ward, 78, of Columbia, NC passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at her home surrounded by family. Born in Tyrrell County, NC on February 2, 1930, she was the daughter of Joseph and Alethia Brickhouse. Mrs. Ward was a 1948 graduate of Columbia High School and retired from the Federal Government. She was a member of the Columbia Missionary Baptist Church and was a past matron of Edith Chapter #160, and Columbia Chapter #281, Order of the Eastern Star.
She was first married to Thomas K. Yerby, Jr. of Columbia who preceded her in death and later married to Francis E. Ward who survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children, Chris Yerby and wife Ellen of Wilmington, NC; Karen Yerby of Raleigh, NC; Richard Ward and wife Teresa of Irmo, SC; John Ward and wife Joy of Raleigh, NC; and Francis Ward, Jr. and wife Lei Anne of Phoenix, AZ.; one brother, Joseph A. Brickhouse of Rocky Mount, NC and is preceded in death by her sister Doris B. Simmons. Mrs. Ward had eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and her many friends.
Visitation will be Thursday evening, April 3, from 7-9 p.m. at Columbia Missionary Baptist Church, 710 Bridge Street, Columbia, NC. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Columbia Missionary Baptist Church, Dr. Jeff Crabtree officiating, followed by a burial service at Oakwood Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bryan Services Columbia Community Chapel.
