Ray Oliver Walker, 87, of Blounts Creek, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Smyrna Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Joel Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Thomas Walker, Chris Bruce, Bob Bruce, Jonathan Cone, Jerome Bushhousen and Rayvon Tripp will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Walker was born in Tipton, W. Va., on Oct. 2, 1920. He was the son of the late Clifford Q. and Anna Bell Walker. He was a graduate of Nicholas County High School. He served in the Navy during World War II. On Oct. 17, 1943, he married the former Nina Lee Silverthorne, who survives. He was a records supervisor with the Appalachian Power Company at the time of his retirement in 1980. Upon moving to Blounts Creek in 1981, he worked for 10 years with Washington Utilities in inventory control until his second retirement in 1991. He was a member of Smyrna Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Larry Ray Walker of Washington; one daughter, Peggy Ann Bruce of Longwood, Fla.; one sister, Effie Rutledge of Montgomery, W. Va.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at Smyrna Free Will Baptist Church and other times at the home.
