GRIMESLAND — Alfonza Burgess Stevens, 72, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Stevens, a native of Onslow County, lived most of his adult life in Pitt County and had been a resident of Grimesland for the past 35 years. He managed grocery stores for 40 years having worked in Pitt and Beaufort counties. After his retirement, he operated a lawn care service for several years. He was a member of the Grimesland Pentecostal Holiness Church for over 35 years where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and played guitar for the church choir.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and fishing. He always had a smile on his face and took pleasure in making others laugh.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Thigpen Stevens, an infant son, Dwight M. Stevens, his parents, Ashley A. and Zannie Jacobs Stevens, three brothers, Vernon Stevens, Howard Stevens and Rufus Stevens.
He is survived by his: daughters, Debra Kay “Debbie” Stevens of Simpson and Lisa M. Stevens of Greenville; son, Timothy D. Stevens of Grimesland; grandchildren, Brandon Stevens and Brittany Stevens both of Greenville; brother, Warren Stevens of Wallkill, NY; sisters, Carolyn Fisher and Edna Burch both of Richlands, NC.
The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. on Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
