Mrs. Mamie Shepard Roughton, 87, of Columbia died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Britthaven of Edenton.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell with the Rev. Joe Wynns officiating. Burial will follow in Azalea Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Roughton was born in Beaufort County, the daughter of the late James F. and Ethel Bernie Shepard. During World War II, she worked as a machinist at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. She was married to Herbert L. Roughton, who preceded her in death. She was a former accountant with Woolworth Stores and a homemaker. She attended Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Rose R. Wiggins of Newport News, Va.; one son, Donald Ray Roughton of Columbia; one brother, George W. Shepard of Hopewell, Va.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Olise S. Warner and two brothers, Pearley Shepard and Raleigh Shepard.
The family will receive friends Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
