Wilbert Earl Roper, a resident of 13555 U.S. Highway 264 in Swan Quarter, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Cross Creek Health Care in Swan Quarter.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jobes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Swan Quarter with Elder Levi Murray, pastor, and Elder Anthony Roper officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Swan Quarter.
Mr. Roper was born Sept. 28, 1929. He was the son of the late Flossie Chase and Elliot Roper of Swan Quarter. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Alice and Thomas Chase. Mr. Roper attended the Hyde County Training School in Sladesville and studied at Beaufort County Community College. He was a life-long member of Jobes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and deacon. Mr. Roper was a retired heavy equipment mechanic.
On June 8, 1966, he married Mattie Hardy.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie H. Roper of the home; three daughters, Earlene Bell of Jamaica, N.Y., Carolyn McCloud of Raleigh and Claudette Roper of Swan Quarter; two sons, Randall Roper of Swan Quarter and Elder Anthony Roper of Raleigh; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Roper was preceded in death by his siblings, Arthur Bolton and Josey Mae Bolton.
The family will receive friends at the home, 13555 U.S. Highway 264 in Swan Quarter.
Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bonner St. in Washington.
