Mr. Roy Odell Smith, 85, a resident of 312 Taylor’s Store Road, Merry Hill, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home &Crematory, Edenton, with the Rev. Ashby Browder officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor.
Mr. Smith was born in Columbia, son of the late Joseph Cephus and Mary Frances Godwin Smith. He worked as a farmer, log-scaler at sawmills, shop teacher and deputy sheriff. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 182. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II. He served more than 40 years as a supervisor with the Tyrrell County Soil and Water Conservation Board. He was a 35-year member of the Albemarle Resource, Conservation and Development Council.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Ainsley Smith; two daughters, Fran S. Byrum of Merry Hill and Pam S. Cummings of Washington; a son, Ira Leroy Smith of Pinetown; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, twins Delmer ad Delton Smith, who died at birth, and Ralph Smith.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home.
