Mr. Arvel Jack Dotson, Sr., age 73, of Bath, NC, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008 at his home.
Mr. Dotson was born in Summerville, Georgia, on September 19, 1935, to Cleo Parker Dotson Johnson and Arvel A. Dotson. He attended school in Rome, Georgia.
Jack joined the Navy in 1952, where he served his country for 23 years. During this time, he served aboard five ships: the USS Kula Gulf, the Valcour, the USS Saratoga, the USS Independence, and the USS Enterprise. He was the reunion planner for 15 years for the USS Kula Gulf. After retiring from the Navy, he went to work for the Civil Service as a GS 12 in Oceana, Virginia.
Jack was an active member in the Virginia Beach Lynhaven 220 Masonic Lodge, the Chesapeake Scottish Rites, the Kedive Shriners of Chesapeake, and the D.A.V. Havelock in North Carolina.
Jack was married in 1962 to Vicki Cooke. Three years into their marriage they joined the Virginia Beach Church of Christ, where he taught the Young People’s Sunday School class. His family lived in Virginia Beach until his retirement in 1990, when they moved to their present home in Washington, North Carolina.
Jack is survived by his wife, Vicki; two sons, Joey Dotson of Washington, NC and Jay Dotson and his wife, Bettie Jean of Currituck, NC; one daughter, Leigh Woolard of Washington; five grandchildren, Adam Ross Dotson, Jessica Lee Dotson, Victoria Aiko Dills, Joseph Lee Dotson, Jr., and Grayce Lake Woolard; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Jack Dotson, and Ava Lee Gray; one brother, Doug Dotson of Atlanta, GA; one nephew, Doug Dotson, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; one niece, Fran Dotson of Atlanta, GA; and his step-mother, Francis Mathis Dotson of Rome, GA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Erma Lee Carter on August 6, 2008.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Pinewood Memorial Park in Greenville, NC with the Rev. David Pryor officiating with Masonic Rites and Military Honors.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at Hillside Funeral Service, Washington, NC.
