Mrs. Virginia Council Gibson, age 88, a resident of 108 N. Reed Drive, Washington died Sunday morning December 14, 2008 at Beaufort County Medical Center.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Tuesday December 16, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington and were conducted by Rev. Darryl Evans. Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery. Lawrence Ward, Dr. Frank Stallings, Phil Lewis, Kim Nicholls, Dick Roy and Bobby Roberson served as pallbearers.
Mrs. Gibson was born in Wake County on June 27, 1920, to the late Thomas Claude Council and the late Mattie Harward Council. She was a graduate of Broughton High School in Raleigh and a 1940 graduate of Meredith College where she received a degree in music. On August 24, 1943, she married Ed Gibson, Jr. who survives. Mrs. Gibson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Washington. She served as choir director, organist and sang in the choir. She was called upon by many other local congregations to fill in as their organist or pianist. For over 35 years, Mrs. Gibson taught piano to many students in the Washington and surrounding areas.
In addition to her husband, Ed Gibson, Jr. of the home, she is survived by her son, Ed Gibson, III of Huntersville, NC, her daughters, Stuart Gibson of Wilson, Lesley Gibson Shaneyfelt of Wilson, her daughter in law; Marianne Gibson of Wadsworth, Ohio; her son in law Allen Shaneyfelt of Wilson and her two grandchildren, James and Lindsay Shaneyfelt. Mrs. Gibson is preceded in death by her brothers, T.C. Council and Robert Council and her sister, Sallie Council Lee.
The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home, 108 N. Reed Drive, Washington.
