Mrs. Thelma Davenport Hassell, 88, of 529 Riverneck Road, Columbia, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at home.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Columbia Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Crabtree officiating. Burial will follow in the Soundside Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Hassell was born Feb. 12, 1920, in Tyrrell County. She was the daughter of the late Percy and Lillie Brickhouse Davenport. Mrs. Hassell was a member of Columbia Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as church custodian for more than 30 years.
Survivors include two sons, Fentress Ray Hassell Jr. of Columbia and Monty G. Hassell of Willow Spring; two daughters, Gladys H. Harrison of Columbia and Mary Louise H. Page of Winterville; a brother, Dallas Davenport of Columbia; two sisters, Wilma D. Spencer and Clara Mae D. Rhodes, both of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and eight great-stepgrandchildren.
Mrs. Hassell was preceded in death by a daughter, Lillie Mae Hassell; three brothers, Thomas Davenport, Percy Davenport Jr. and William Davenport; and a sister, Ida D. Maitland.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Columbia Missionary Baptist Church and other times at the home.
