Mr. John Franklin Bryant Whitfield, 77, of 3273 Flat Swamp Road, Blounts Creek, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Valley Nursing Center, Taylorsville.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Anna Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Moore Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Moore family cemetery.
Mr. Whitfield was born in Craven County on July 27, 1931. He was the son of the late James H. and Evelyn H. Bryant. He was the surrogate son of the late George L. and Hattie B. Whitfield. He was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Korean conflict. He was married to Ethel M. Whitfield, who survives. He was a member of Saint Anna Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Carter of Blounts Creek and Loretta Stancil and Wonza Garolds, both of New Bern; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one brother, Lonnie Bryant of Maryland.
The family will receive friends at the home.
A walk-in visitation will be conducted today from 1-7 p.m. at Whitfield &Whitley Funeral Home, Washington.
