EDENTON — Raymond Earl Phelps, 84, of 102 Manor Road, died Monday, February 16, 2009 in the Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Phelps was born in Washington County and was the son of the late Wheeler and Martha Phelps. A retired purchasing agent from East Carolina Supply in Plymouth, he was a lifetime member of Saints Delight Church of Christ in Roper where he had served as chairman of the board of Elders, had taught Sunday school, served as the superintendent of Sunday school, and had been a member of the Adult Choir. A 54 year member of Perseverance Masonic Lodge #59 in Plymouth, he was a US Marine Corps veteran of World War II, served in the Pacific Theater, fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima, and was a Purple Heart recipient.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary E. Phelps, a daughter, Marcia Phelps and sisters, Blanche Asby, Evelyn Davenport, Catherine Styons, Lillian Phelps, Iceland Gaylord, and Margaret Skiles.
Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Joyce Snell Twine Phelps; a daughter, Glenda Smith and husband Scott of Plymouth; step-children, Linda Twine Jurin of Ft. Myers, FL and Kevin B. Twine of Washington, DC; a sister, Sybil Ansell and husband Curtis of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Lee Johnson and wife Rebecca of Shelby, NC and Brandon Smith of Manteo; and two great-grandchildren, Will and Mary E. Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Saints Delight Church of Christ by Pastors Lloyd Davis and Thomas Biggs. Burial with military rites will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens in Plymouth. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the church and all other times at the residence. Miller Funeral Home &Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton is handling arrangements.
