Burning tires in a junk-strewn field sent a column of black smoke towering over Washington.
Firefighters from two trucks with Bunyan Volunteer Fire Department took about half an hour to extinguish the blaze.
Williams said the secret to the department’s success was lots and lots of water.
One truck from the Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS-Inspections Department also responded.
The field in which the fire was burning is behind Quail Ridge Apartments off of Keysville.
Members of the Washington Police Department and deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to control traffic.
