Herbert Stuart “Herbie” Whitley Jr., 66, of 1398 Herbie Lane, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at Martin General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Believers Fellowship Church by the Rev. Rick Carson. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Whitley was born in Taylor, Texas, on July 20, 1942 to the late Herbert Stuart Whitley Sr., and Margaret Richardson Whitley. He was owner and operator of Whitley Lumber Company.
Whitley was a well-known race-car engine builder and owner of several race cars and also loved animals and nature.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lane Whitley of Williamston, N.C; daughters, Jane B. Whitley Jordan of Ft. Meyers, Fla. and Denise W. Hardison of Robersonville, N.C.; son, Troy Nicholson of Hamilton, N.C.; brother, David Whitley of Williamston, N.C.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Believers Fellowship Church and at other times at the home.
