Mr. James Albert Davenport, 70, of Columbia, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at his daughter’s residence in Washington.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at Maitland Funeral Home Chapel, Creswell, with Rev. Sylvia Duke officiating. Burial will follow in Saint David’s Cemetery.
Born in Washington County, he was the son of the late Earl V. Davenport and Ruth Ambrose Davenport and was preceded in death by his wife, Melba Berry Davenport; sister, Doris D. Swain and brother, Elwood E. Davenport.
Mr. Davenport was a retired heavy-equipment operator with W.L. Birsch, Inc. and a U.S. Army veteran in Korea.
His family includes daughters Amy D. Hassell and Tanya D. Smith of Washington, N.C.; sons James D. Davenport of Plymouth, N.C., Albert W. Davenport of Edenton, N.C and Vance L. Davenport of Columbia, N.C. and 10 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
