William Caswell Batchelor, 82, of Washington, NC, died peacefully May 1, 2009, at home surrounded by his family following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born March 31, 1927 in Rocky Mount, NC, the son of the late Caswell Ivey and Isadora Bellamy Batchelor.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Peggy, son Bill and wife Augusta of Washington, daughter Dean Duke and husband Dennis of Raleigh, grandchildren Matt and Beth Batchelor, Reid and Will Duke and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Kerney Batchelor of Nashville, NC, his sister, Arlene Peele and uncle, Wiley Batchelor of Rocky Mount.
He graduated from Churchland High in Portsmouth, VA in 1944 and served in the United States Navy before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was employed with Charlotte Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for 37 years serving as district manager, retiring in 1989. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Washington and active in the Timberlake Sunday School Class.
His employment achievements enabled him to travel the globe. He and Peggy were able to visit six continents, including two trips around the world, during his lifetime. He was a generous, devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. Some of his favorite times were family beach trips and coaching Little Tarheel League Baseball.
A graveside service will be held Sunday May 3, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6:30 to 8:00 on Saturday at Paul Funeral Home and other times at the home at 415 Bank Street.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Timberlake Sunday School Class.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Widow’s Mite Building Fund, First Baptist Church, 113 N Harvey Street, Washington NC or to the Marion Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington NC.
