Longtime Washington resident Arlene Cushing “Cookie” Hagar, 73, succumbed to a prolonged illness on May 19, 2009. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Arlene moved to eastern North Carolina in the early 1970s where she found the community, friendships and Southern lifestyle that she warmly embraced.
Preceded in death by her parents Edward and Mabel Cushing and sister Carol Lee Gentile, she is survived by son Bryan and daughter Lynn Hagar Barr, three grandchildren, sister Joanne Dramstad, brothers Ron, Douglas and Glenn Cushing.
A memorial service is planned for June 6 at First Christian Church in Washington. “Cookie” was a fun maker at heart. We will remember her charm, quick wit, inner strength and her kind and forgiving nature.
