Ms. Lola Gray Beacham Sawyer, age 82, a former resident of 4949 Market St. Ext., Washington, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Ridgewood Manor.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Oakdale Cemetery and will be conducted by Rev. Gary Murphree.
Ms. Sawyer was born in Beaufort County on December 11, 1924 to the late Claude and Lucy Rawls Beacham. She was a 1948 graduate of East Carolina Teachers College and then went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Bowie University. She was a retired reservist in the United States Army and United States Navy. In 1989 she retired from the Maryland Public Library System where she served for 30 years and also was a driver for the American Red Cross for 25 years. She then returned to Beaufort County to care for her sister and managed Beacham’s Corner Store, the family business, until its closing in 1994. While back in Beaufort County, she was a volunteer at John Cotton Tayloe Elementary School and the Brown Library. Ms. Sawyer was a member of Wares Chapel United Methodist Church where she had served as choir director.
Survivors include one sister, Lena Beacham Wallace of Pantego, one niece, Peggy Satterthwaite and husband Jim of Pantego, two nephews, Dennis Wallace, Jr. and wife, Doris of Pantego, Douglas Beacham of Virginia, two great nieces, Amy Alligood, Tammy Brock and husband Chris, a great nephew, Erik Wallace and two great great nieces, Kayla Alligood and Layla Brock. She was preceded in death by one brother, R.J. Beacham and one sister, Eula Beacham.
