Shelton Leon Mooney, Sr. 63, of 475 Pamlico Beach Road, Belhaven died Friday, June 19, 2009, at his home.
Born in Hyde County, November 11, 1945, he was the son of the late Golden and Beaula Mae Williams Mooney. He graduated from the former Engelhard School and attended Beaufort County Community where he received an Associate Degree in Police Science. He served in the U. S. Army in the HHC-35th Engineer Group in Cam Rahn Bay, Viet Nam, worked with the County of Hyde as Building Inspector until his retirement and was a member of VietNam Veterans organization and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of Tri-County Ruritan Club where he was a former president. His passion was carpentry and building and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He was a member of St. Clair’s Church of Christ.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Phil Emmert will officiate. Burial will follow in Fulford Cemetery with Leon Williams and Steve Bryan officiating in the graveside service.
Surviving are his wife, Janelle Guthrie Mooney; son, Shelton L. Mooney, Jr., wife, Lauren and daughters, Brenna and Anna of Germantown, MD; Patrick I Mooney, wife, Shana, children, Blaine and Anisa of Belhaven; daughters, Shara D. Chilcoat, husband Ken, children, K. C. and Nellie of Engelhard, Phoebe C. Garrish, husband, Bradley of Greenville; brother, Donald Ray Mooney of Fairfield; sisters, Dottie M. Gibbs and Priscilla M. Berry both of Engelhard; two very special friends, Jennifer Burgard and Rebecca Mitchem.
In addition to his parents, Leon was preceded in death by brother, Norman Mooney; sister, Kathy Spencer; grandsons, Thomas and Theodore.
