VARINIA, Va. The Washington 12U All-Stars are two wins away from winning a championship and qualifying for the World Series.
Washington continued its impressive run Friday, after a delay of three hours because of rain, with a 4-0 victory over Warren County, the Virginia state champions.
Washington will now face Pitt County at 2 p.m. today. With a victory, Washington will advance to Sundays championship game. A win there would land Washington in Wilson for the World Series.
Haley Hutchins fired a one-hit gem while striking out 14.
The All-Stars did the bulk of their damage in the third inning in this Southeast Regional Babe Ruth Softball Tournament game. Catie Dority got things started with a single. She stole second and third and then scooted home on Haley Wrights sac fly.
Adriana Tyson smacked a double. Kaylee Jackson followed by lacing a double of her own, driving in Tyson in the process. Kelsey Lang then ripped a single that brought in Jackson for a 3-0 lead, which was more than enough for Hutchins.
Dority led Washington at the plate by going 2-for-3. Also collecting hits for Washington were Jackson (1-3, 2B, RBI), Lang (1-2, RBI), Wright (1-3, RBI), Ann Hunt Tanner (1-2), Harley Hudson (1-3) and Tyson (1-3, 2B).
Washington opened with a pair of wins Thursday, beating Marshall County (Tenn.) 5-4 and Madison (NC) 13-1.
Sundays championship game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
15U Baseball
BEAR CREEK — Washingtons 15U baseball team was forced to forfeit its game Friday afternoon.
Austin Mitchell and Will Masten collided during a play in the first inning, and both players had to be taken to the emergency room. Washington, which posted an 18-5 win over Henderson-Vance in its first game of the 2009 ENC State Babe Ruth Tournament, was unable to complete Fridays game.
The loss sent Washington into the losers bracket. The Washington All-Stars are scheduled to face New Bern at noon today in an elimination game.
Washington is familiar with New Bern. New Bern handed Washington a pair of losses, 10-1 and 18-6, to win the ENC District 6 championship in Washington earlier this summer.
If Washington wins, the All-Stars will play again at 7 p.m. today.
18U Softball
