Horace Monroe Harwell Sr., 94, a resident of The Landing, formerly of 1209 Dogwood Lane, Wilson went home to his Lord at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, October 15, 2009. Horace will also join his loving wife, Mary who went before him six weeks ago after 71 year together. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park with Masonic Rites. The Rev. Joan Vella and Dr. Craig Childs will officiate. The family will receive friends 2 – 3:30 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.
Horace was the son of Thomas Edgar Harwell and Sarah Ann Isenhower Harwell. After the death of his mother, his father married Kate who raised him along with two brothers and three sisters.
He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad serving as a signal maintainer. He was a member of Wilson Masonic Lodge #712, the Scottish and York Rite Bodies and a Sudan Temple Shriner and a member of the Sudan Monster Truck Patrol.
Horace will be lovingly remembered by two sons, Horace “Choco” Harwell Jr. and wife, Ellen of High Point and William “Bill” Harwell and wife, Barbara of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Mary Lisa Harwell of Charlotte, Daniel Monroe Harwell of High Point, Heather Huxley and husband, Huck of Charlotte and Brian Reid and wife, Gennifer of Mooresville; five great-grandchildren, Davis, Hannah, Ansley, Brooks Reid and Reid Huxley and a sister, Mary H. Bradford of Kannapolis.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bland Huff Harwell and a grandson, William Chadwick Harwell; his parents, sisters, Ruby Harwell Hager of Kannapolis and Betty Chambers of York, SC; brothers, Edgar Harwell of Concord and Fred Harwell of Washington, NC.
There are many others of Horace’s extended family and friends that we wish to thank for your love and caring during the last years, most especially his caretakers, Kim Barnes and Quincy Jeffries of WilMed Hospice, Ruby Waters of Comfort Care and Betty Thompson from The Landing. Mom and Dad loved you all. We can truly celebrate their lives and triumph.
