At an early age, she accepted Christ at St. John Church of Christ-Disciples of Christ in Washington, North Carolina. Sister Wooden was a diligent committed member who served as a youth Sunday school teacher. Elder Wilkins required his Sunday school teachers to write detailed lesson plans and submit them in his office prior to teaching on Sunday. Mrs. Wooden would travel 25 miles from her home to church on Saturday in order to submit her lesson plans and organize her classroom for Sunday school.
Mrs. Wooden was a Bible Scholar. She attended biblical classes on training for church service. She served as the church secretary of the vault club and as the church treasurer. In addition, she sang in the Senior Choir. In 1998, Mrs. Wooden relocated to the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area because of her illness and to live with her daughters. At this time she became a member of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church and was an active member. She was a diligent domestic engineer (house wife) as well as a record keeper of the Wooden farm. She raised five (5) children and one (1) grandson, Ray (deceased). Mrs. Wooden was educated in the Washington City Public Schools and employed as a caregiver by the Martin County Health Department. She visited and cared for the sick, elderly, and anyone that needed a home cooked meal. Mrs. Wooden was a tenacious lady; she passed her drivers license test at the age of 60 and continued to drive until her illness. Mrs. Wooden had a passion for quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking, reading and interpreting the scriptures.
She leaves to cherish loving memories, two daughters: Susie Tobias (Nathaniel-deceased); and Judy Bowden (Frank); two sons: William Oliver Wooden; Vernon Wooten (Gwen); a son-in-law, Roosevelt Simmons; 13 grandchildren; a special godson, Willie Lee Arnold; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and a myriad of friends who have come to think of her as family.
