Elizabeth Marshall Davis Mallard, died on January 16, 2010. She was born in Columbia, South Carolina, the daughter of James Quentin Davis and Elsie Homes Davis, on July 3, 1913. She moved with her family to Durham, North Carolina in 1918 where she has lived since. In 1941 she was married to Junius Henry Mallard, who has predeceased her in death.
She graduated from the local schools in Durham and also graduated from St. Marys Junior College in Raleigh, NC. She was employed as one of the first three employees of the newly organized Hospital Care Association which later became Blue Cross/Blue Shield. She retired after thirteen years in 1946 as an officer of the Association.
She was active in the community and in her church, having served as President of the Durham Junior League and President of the Women of the Church of St. Phillips Church and St. Stephens Church and twice served as Chairman of the Colonial Dames – Durham Orange County Committee in the State of North Carolina. She was a member of Hope Valley Country Club, Canterbury Literary Club serving as President, and the Daughters of the Cincinnati.
Mrs. Mallard is survived by her two sons, J. Henry Mallard, Jr. and his wife, Lou Thigpen Mallard of Bath, and J. Quentin Davis Mallard and his wife, Katherine L. McKee of Durham. She has four grandchildren, J.Q. Davis Mallard, Jr., John McDevitt Mallard, Anna Rayborn Mallard, and Margaret Rebecca Mallard. Also, three step great-grandchildren, Brittany Debra Levine, Jenna Allison Levine and Scott David Levine. Mrs. Mallard is also survived by a sister, Anne Davis Reid of Blacksburg, Virginia, and two nephews, Richard J. Reid, III, and wife, Kristine, and James P. Reid and wife, Alicia; and a great niece, Erika Anne Reid.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 82 Kimberly Drive, Durham, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church.
