Cox named Newcomer of the Week|Cantrell enjoys career-night

Cor-J Cox is beginning to assert himself on the college hardwood.
Cox, a former standout at Washington High School, is playing at Mississippi Valley State. Cox was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Newcomer of the Week for his recent play.
He had a career-high 15 points, hitting 7 of 9 from the floor and 1 of 4 at the free throw line, to go with two rebounds, a block and an assist in a 77-69 loss to Alabama A&M. Cox also had 15 points and two rebounds in an 82-71 win over Alabama State.
Cox is averaging 4.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
JORDAN CANTRELL
Jordan Cantrell, a former standout at Washington High School and Terra Ceia, is playing at Randolph-Macon. The freshman had a career night in a 104-47 win over Hollins. Making her first start in college, Cantrell had a career-best 16 points, which included hitting four 3-pointers, to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Cantrell is averaging 5.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.6 steals per game.
STEPHANIE HOLTON
Stephanie Holton, a former star at Columbia High School, is playing at Shenandoah. Holton pumped in 15 points, sharing for team-high honors, to go with two rebounds and two assists in a 71-58 loss to Ferrum.
Holton is averaging 6.4 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.
HUNTER JOHNSON
Hunter Johnson, a former star at Pungo, is a captain for the Meredith Avenging Angels.
Johnson is averaging 7.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
SAMANTHA SMITH
Samantha Smith, a former star at Washington High School, is playing at Tallahassee Community College.
Smith is averaging 3.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
ANGELO SHARPLESS
Angelo Sharpless continues to sparkle for the Elizabeth City State University Vikings.
Sharpless, a former star at Plymouth High School, scored a career-high 24 points, including the game winner, in a 65-64 win over Virginia Union. He hit 9 of 12 shots, including both of his 3-point attempts, and all four of his free throws. Sharpless added seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals.
Sharpless is averaging 12.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 0.9 blocks a game.
BRADLEY VAN STAALDUINEN
Bradley Van Staalduinen, a former star at Terra Ceia, is playing at Wingate.
Van Staalduinen is averaging 2.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game.

Gabe Gardner and Darien Peele, former standouts at Washington High School, are wrestling at Campbell University.
Gardner is 2-3 with a pin at 133 pounds.
Peele, also a freshman, is 0-4 at 157 pounds.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
MEREDITH KNOX
Meredith Knox, a former standout at Washington High School, got off to a hot start in her senior year of softball with the Anderson Trojans.
Knox went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, five runs scored and five RBIs in her first two games. She also had one stolen base.
DONECIA EBRON
Donecia Ebron, a former standout at Northside High School, is playing at Fayetteville. Ebron is 0-for-2 on the young season.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
CHASE TRIPP
Chase Tripp, a former standout at Washington High School, is now a member of the N.C. Central Eagles.
Tripp, a 6-2, 245-pound defensive lineman, transferred from Winston-Salem State University. He played in six games for WSSU in 2009, recording five tackles and a pass break-up as a freshman.
C.J. WILSON
C.J. Wilson, a former star with the East Carolina Pirates and at Northside High School, played in the 2010 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
The 6-3, 283-pound Wilson played on the South squad, which fell 31-13 to the North.
Wilson recorded a fumble recovery in the game. North quarterback Sean Canfield was sacked and lost the football, and Wilson pounced on it at the 10:32 mark of the second quarter.
The Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year did not have any tackles in the game.
DAMIEN WILKINS
Damien Wilkins, a Washington native, is playing with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Wilkins is averaging 5.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.8 steals per game.
OVERSEAS BASKETBALL
ELTON COFFIELD
Elton Coffield, a former standout at Williamston High School, is playing for the BSW Sixers in Germany.
Coffield is averaging 19.4 points, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
JOSEPH BARBER
Joseph Barber, a former standout at Terra Ceia, is playing for CS Energia Rovinari in Romania.
Barber is averaging 9.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 0.6 steals per game.

Ralph Biggs, a former star at Washington High school, is playing for Krasnie Krilya Samara in Russia.
Biggs is averaging 9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.3 assists per game.
