Washington got what is likely its best all-around performance on Thursday as it navigated its way past Northside 10-2 at Futrell Field.
Just about everyone in the starting lineup had a hit for the Pam Pack (1-4), who finished the day with 11. While on the flip side, Washington used three pitchers in the victory and all of them had solid outings.
Gage Tyson, the starting pitcher, picked up the win throwing three full innings, allowing one run, four hits and no walks.
Tyson was followed by Michael Hollis who gave up one run and struck out three batters in two innings, while Jamie Landon closed out the contest throwing two scoreless innings.
We played like we practiced today, Washingtons first-year coach Travis Rogerson said. We have been practicing hard, our guys bring it in practice but it hasnt been translating to the field; today it did. We hit the ball all night and played defense behind our pitchers.
Second baseman Will Swain (2-3) got Washington on the board first when he ripped a double to left field to score Jake Duke. Swain then crossed home plate on the same play after a Northside two-base error.
Panthers starting pitcher Tyler Waters had an up and down outing as he threw 4 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs, six hits and four walks.
After a scoreless second, Northside cut the deficit to 2-1 when Josh Miller (1-4) drove in Brandon Ussery (1-3) with an RBI single.
The Pack answered in the third, rallying for four runs as it took advantage of some good hitting and shaky defense by Northside (1-5).
Gator Moore (1-4) led off the inning reaching second after a misjudged pop up to left field. Weasel Moore (1-3) drove him home on the next at bat with an RBI double. Weasel wasnt on second too long, as Michael Goldberg drove him home with a two-bagger of his own.
Goldberg hit the ball well all day and went 3-3 with three RBIs to lead the Pack (2-4).
One batter later, Michael Robinson (1-3) allowed Goldberg to score from third when he hit into a fielders choice. Gage Tyson completed the rally when his single scored Robinson to give Washington a 6-1 lead.
The Pack kept the pedal to the floor as it added three more runs in the next inning to push the game out of reach.
Swain led off the inning with a single, then scored on a Gator Moore hit combined with a Northside error. After Waters got Weasel Moore to pop out to center, Goldberg smacked an RBI single to make it a 8-1 game. Goldberg would be the last batter Waters faced.
Taylor Woolard came on for Northside and allowed three more runs over 2 2/3 innings.
They (Washington) swung it well, and they have a good hitting team, but we helped them a lot, Northside coach Keith Boyd said. We had some mistakes on the bases early and hit into some timely double plays. … If we can just get a little bit sharper at a few little things we could have a pretty good club.
Both teams will be back in action today as the Panthers hit the road to face Perquimans while the Pam Pack will travel to West Craven.
