Michael Alan Heekin, 69, of Hickory, NC died on Sunday, May 23, 2010.
Mr. Heekin retired from his position in human resources with Rockwell International of Lenoir, NC. He had previously been employed as a personnel manager with Burlington Industries and A.P. Parts, both of Goldsboro, NC.
He served as a United States Air Force Captain in the Vietnam War stationed in Thailand. During his military service he was awarded the Bronze Star among other decorations.
He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Edward F. and Ruth Kirby Heekin. He was a 1958 graduate of Walnut Hills High School of Cincinnati where he excelled in sports. He received a MBA from Central University of Michigan and a B.S. from San Francisco State.
A life long Republican, Mr. Heekin served as chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party from 1972 to 1974 and attended by invitation the 1972 Presidential Inauguration. Also an avid golfer, he achieved three hole in ones in his career. He was a member of Catawba Valley Country Club for over twenty-five years.
He is survived by his daughters, Andrea Gail Heekin of Belhaven, NC and Sarah Llewellyn Heekin of Goldsboro, NC; his brother, Timothy Heekin and wife, Linda of Wilmington, Ohio; his nephew, Geoff Heekin of Chicago, Illinois; his niece, Katherine Heekin of Portland, Oregon; and his step-daughters, Marsha Carson and Karen Meads, both of Hickory, NC.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Heekin; his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Edward F. Heekin, Jr. and wife, Judy.
The family will receive visitors at Catawba Valley Country Club on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 from 57 p.m. A full military internment with the Reverend Gene Carpenter presiding will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro, NC. The family will receive friends and family after the service at Goldsboro Country Club.
