GREENVILLE Mr. Delano R. Wilson, 72, went home to live with his Lord, Saturday, June 26, 2010, at PCMH surrounded by loved ones and friends.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Ayden Cemetery.
Mr. Wilson, a native of Pitt County, lived all of his life in the Winterville/Ayden community. He received an undergraduate and masters degree in education from East Carolina University. He continued his education at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke after he began his 34 year teaching career. He taught in Craven County Schools, Pitt County Schools, and for ECU.
Mr. Wilson was named Teacher of the Year in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, and 1989. He also, received an Outstanding Educator Award for 33 years of service. He was a past president of the Pitt County Local Unit and District 15 of North Carolina Retired School Personnel and served on the NC Textbook Commission.
Mr. Wilson was a long time member of the Ayden Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Ayden Masonic Lodge #498 A.F. and A.M. serving as secretary for 25 years. He served as president of the Ayden Rural Fire Association and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ayden Boys and Girls Club. He was a certified Master Gardener and served on the Pitt County Agriculture Service Board of Directors. He had just completed a term on the Pitt County Board of Education in 2008. He was a member of Rose Hill FWB Church, where he served as a chair of the deacon board and taught Sunday School for 50 years.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, W.C. and Bertha Hardee Wilson, 6 brothers, and a sister.
He is survived by his: wife of 45 years, Barbara Boyd Wilson; daughters, Marjolein W. Cannon and husband, Paul, of Winterville; and Barbara Dell W. Carter and husband, Shanon, of Washington; one granddaughter, Hailey Nelda Cannon; adopted son, Lesley Thibodeaux, of Charleston, SC; special friend and caretaker, Joyce Barnes, of Washington; and brothers, Snodie Wilson, of Kenansville, Lloyd Wilson, of Greenville, and Bobby Wilson, of Dunn.
The family received friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at his home.
