Mr. John Thomas Linton, age 92, a resident of 7900 Creedmoor Rd. Raleigh, NC, and a former resident of Washington died Wednesday September 29, 2010 at his home.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday October 2, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Washington officiated by Dr. Jimmy Moore. Burial will be private. Lee Penrod, Vance Smith, Rev. Bob Paciocco, Marvin Alligood, Jr. Mickey Cochran, Aaron Adams, Jim Buckman and Sam “Curley” Smith will serve as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Washington Lions Club, Timberlake-Baracca Sunday School Class and the Senior Group at Washington Yacht &Country Club.
Mr. Linton was born in Beaufort County on June 10, 1918, one of five children of the late Milton Hertford Linton and the late Julia Davis Linton. He was raised in the Free Will Baptist Children’s Home that he left at age of seventeen after graduating from Middlesex High School. Mr. Linton graduated from Campbell College in 1939 and from Wake Forest College (now Wake Forest University) in 1941. Mr. Linton was married to the former Ethel Corine Rogers, who preceded him in death on December 15, 2009. He coached basketball for one year at Lillington High School and then served three years in the U.S. Army with tours of duty in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. Following his military service, Mr. Linton spent 35 years working for the North Carolina Employment Security Commission, retiring in 1981 as a field tax auditor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Washington, NC, having taught the young adult Sunday school class for a number of years, served as the Sunday school superintendent and on the deacon board. Mr. Linton also worked with the sports program for youth in the Y.M.C.A. in Durham, NC and with little league and Jr. Babe Ruth Baseball in Washington, NC. He was a past president and member of the Lion’s club and was an avid golfer for many years.
Mr. Linton is survived by a son; Bruce Linton of Black Mountain, NC and a daughter, Anne Linton Cobb of Wilmington, NC and two grandsons.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Linton is preceded in death by two sisters; Mary Gray Davis and Halen Linton Gordon; two brothers; Albert Linton and Ivey H. Linton.
The family will receive friends for thirty minutes following the service at the church.
