Mrs. Velma S. Hendrix

Mrs. Velma Mae Shirley Hendrix, age 78, a resident of 41381 Hwy 264 E. in Belhaven, died Sunday October 31, 2010 at her home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday November 3, 2010 at Mt. Olive Church of Christ and will be conducted by Matthew C. Bradham. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Chris Guin, Tyler Guin, Philip Guin, Jamie Hughes, Will Hughes, James Rose, Jamie Glover and Clint Hendrix.
Mrs. Hendrix was born in Greene County on February 5, 1932 to the late Arthur E. and Sallie Cobb Shirley. On August 20, 1951 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath, she married William Archie Hendrix who survives. She was a 1950 graduate of Chicod High School, where she was the homecoming queen and captain of the girls’ basketball team. She was employed as the bookkeeper in the foodservice system with the Wilson County Schools. As bookkeeper, she developed a computer program that was adopted statewide in the public school foodseravice system. She was a loving mother and took a lot of pride in her six children.
Survivors include her husband, Willie Archie Hendrix of the home; three daughters, Denise Guin (Jay) of Tuscaloosa, AL, Michele Hughes (Mel) of Cary, Carol Rose (Jim) of Shelby; three sons, Kevin Hendrix (Gloria) of Wilson, Rod Hendrix (Susan Bass) of Pikeville, Chris Hendrix (Dawne) of Grimesland; one brother, Earl Shirley (Adelaide) of Farmville; her twin sister, Selma Bowen of Greenville; seventeen grandchildren, Chris Guin, Jonathan Guin (Erin), Tyler Guin, Philip Guin, Jamie Hughes (Whitney), Will Hughes (Beth Anne), Clint Hendrix, Leah Rose, James Rose, Laura Rose, Kandace Hendrix, Christy Stearns (Richard), Jamie Glover, Kennedy Bass, Cody Bass, Hailey Hendrix, Hannah Hendrix; four great-grandchildren, Preston Hughes, Blair Hendrix, Jordan Stearns and Bryson Stearns. Mrs. Hendrix was preceded in death by four brothers, Milton Shirley, Lloyd Shirley, Harvey Shirley and infant James Shirley and three sisters, Ethel Wainwright, Ruby Miller and infant Gladys Shirley.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church and other times at the home. Mrs. Hendrix will lie in state on Tuesday November 2, 2010 after 12 p.m. at Paul Funeral home in Belhaven.
