Carolyn Spencer Harris, 98, long time resident of Swan Quarter and more recently a resident of Cross Creek Health Care Center, died late Saturday, November 13, 2010, at Cross Creek.
Born in Engelhard, August 28, 1912, she was the daughter of the late John Milton and Mary Neal Spencer. She was married to Willie Gray Harris who preceded her in death.
A lifelong Methodist, “Miss Carolyn” was active in United Methodist Women, was editor of “Kede Green” the newsletter of the Greenville District of United Methodist Women until 1995, served as pianist and organist and chairperson of the Worship Committee at Providence United Methodist Church and led the Cross Creek Ministry on behalf of the church for many years. She graduated from Hyde County High School and East Carolina Teacher’s College. She retired from the Hyde County Schools after 42 years of teaching, at Engelhard and Swan Quarter, in 1975 and maintained her activity in Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, directed the Glee Club and led the drama group at school as extra activity. She was long active in the American Cancer Society in Hyde County as well as the Lung Association for many years. She continued to deliver Meals-On-Wheels at the age of 85 and was a help-mate for one and all. Carolyn loved to travel and broaden her horizons. She loved to cook and was famous for her dinners and especially her homemade rolls.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Providence United Methodist Church. Rev. Valerie Ballance-Tyson will officiate. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be John Spencer, Bob Spencer, Harry Martin, Pete Credle, C.W. Cahoon and Wayne Hodges.
Surviving are two brothers, Warren Gray Spencer and wife, Grace of Swan Quarter and Charles Neal Spencer and wife, Annette of Wilmington; a sister, Julia Robena Spencer of Wilmington; a sister-in-law, Mae Spencer; eleven nieces and nephews; seventeen great-nieces and nephews and seven great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Milton Spencer and a sister, Mary Lewis Martin.

The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
