Donald A. Kimberlin, age 82, a resident of 161 Wheelhouse Court, Washington, died Sunday, November 14, 2010. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 22, 2010 at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA at 11:00 a.m. The family received friends at Hillside Funeral Service of Washington, NC, on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.
Mr. Kimberlin was born on November 30, 1927 in Roseland, LA, son of the late Warren L. Kimberlin and Lillian Kimberlin. After the death of his father in January of 1930, his mother moved to El Paso, TX. She remarried a military man, thus Donald became an "Army Brat". These travels included tours of duty in New Jersey, Philippines, Georgia, and finally North Carolina. He enlisted in the Army Signal Corps, receiving his basic and signal training at Camp Crowder, MO, and Fort Monmouth, NJ. He remained at Fort Monmouth as an instructor. He was transferred overseas to the Signal School at Eta Jima, Japan, serving in the Occupation Forces. At the start of the Korean War, he began training signal troops for the army in Korea. He volunteered for duty in Korea. Mr. Kimberlin was assigned at the Wire Chief of the Pusan Toll switchboard providing long distance service from Japan to Korea. On completion of his tour in Korea, he was assigned to the Signal Office in Fort Eustis, VA. He left the Army at Fort Eustis with a Honorable Discharge. He obtained a Federal Civil Service job in the Signal School at Fort Monmouth, NJ, and shortly after settling in New Jersey, he enrolled in Monmouth Junior College (now Monmouth University). While attending school, he met Regina (Jean) Keale, and they were married. While at Fort Monmouth, he transferred to a small office that began experimenting using computers in the military training system and other developing training techniques. During his time with this office, he was transferred to Fort Gordon, GA, Fort Eustis, VA, and the Fort Monroe, VA. He retired from the U.S. Civil Service and shortly after moved to Washington, NC. During his civil service career, he was awarded a number of Superior Service Awards and retired with a Civilian Commendation Medal.
Mr. Donald Alfred Kimberlin is survived by his wife, Jean of Washington, NC; two daughters, Judith Bolam and Robin Chintawongvanich; 2 sons, Donald and Bruce Kimberlin; 9 grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle and Sarah Bolam, Jaclyn and Rachel Chintawongvanich, Stephen and Christopher Kimberlin, and Andrew and Victoria Kimberlin. He was preceded in death by his sister, Warniece Winston and his brother, Warren Kimberlin.
