Mrs. Janet Moore Waters, age 48, a lifelong resident of Bath, said goodnight to her family and friends on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, and woke up in the arms of Jesus.
Jan was born on Aug. 28, 1962, to Horace Gray and Wilma Woolard Moore, of Creek Road, Bath, who survive. The apple of her daddy’s eye and her momma’s good girl, they cherished their time together. She married her high school sweetheart, Linwood “Lenny” Earl Waters, Jr. and would have celebrated her 30th wedding anniversary on Dec. 20. Jan was the love of his life. Although she herself was not fond of her freckles, he loved every single one and will miss them and her dearly. Together, God blessed them with two children, Erin Elizabeth (John Scott) Cutler and Linwood “Lin” Earl Waters, III, both of Bath. She was also loved by her Chihuahua, Precious. Erin and Lin have fond memories of their mother reading them her favorite book, “Love You Forever.” She was not only a mother, but also a best friend to both of her children. She will hold a special place in their hearts that can never be replaced.
Adored by her older two brothers, Randy Gray (Ann) Moore, of Bath, and H. Steven “Steve” (Victoria) Moore of Greensboro, Jan was always a good sport when introduced as their “oldest sister.” She enjoyed being many years younger than both and reminded them often. Being the only girl, she appreciated having sisters-in-law and genuinely regarded them as sisters.
Jan kept her childhood spirit alive entertaining her nieces and nephews. Numerous weekends were spent with late night sleepovers and early morning cinnamon toast with Hi-C. Only ten years apart, she held a special bond with her nephew, Gray Moore, whom she considered her little brother. She depended on her nephew, Toby Moore, who was always only a phone call away. Holding a special place in her heart, though apart by miles, were nephews, Steven and Jamie Moore, of Wilson. She was proud of the young men they have become. Jan taught and shared with her nieces, Dare (Mike) Imes, Mia (Jamie) Best, Megan Moore, and Ashley (Ellis) Cullipher, her love of music, her dedication to church, and her “Moore” sense of humor. Their Aunt Jan was a living example to them all, modeling the importance of a personal relationship with God and commitment to hard work, friends and family. She was filled with joy every moment she got to spend with her many grand nieces and nephews.
As Bath High School’s Class of 1980 Valedictorian, Jan also served as Editor of The Treasure Chest yearbook. She continued her education at East Carolina University, graduating with honors in 1984 with a Bachelors of Science in Accounting. She began her career as a C.P.A. at Pittard, Perry, and Crone, Inc. and with hard work and dedication achieved partner status at Keech &Company, PA located in downtown Washington. What some would consider just a job, Jan viewed as an opportunity to build and share loving relationships with her clients and co-workers, whom she cared for as extended family. Long-time friends, Gary Keech and Cindy Cochran made each workday worthwhile and memorable.
Jan also leaves behind her church family, Athens Chapel Church of Christ, where she has attended since birth. She shared her love of God and music with others, serving as youth and adult choir directors, VBS musical director, pianist and organist. She volunteered her time and gifts as an active participant in drama, outreach and worship ministries. Jan was fervent in her daily walk with God and desired others to seek and know Him.
Jan was awaiting a kidney transplant and she became passionate about raising the awareness of kidney donation, as well as organ donation in general. She was a member of the National Kidney Foundation and encourages the support of the “Share Your Spare” campaign.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at Athens Chapel Church of Christ, 35 Delia Wallace Road, Bath. Chris Hux and Cleve Edwards will be leading the service. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow in the Moore Family Cemetery on Creek Road, Bath.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Athens Chapel Church of Christ Building Fund or to The National Kidney Foundation.
