Doris Morris Nichols, 97, of 507 U.S. Highway 64 East, Columbia, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at Chowan Hospital in Edenton.
Born in Bertie County, N.C. on Oct. 11, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Henry Lee and Claudine Barker Morris. She was married to William James Nichols who preceded her in death in 1998.
Mrs. Nichols was a retired public school teacher having taught for 38 years in Hertford, Chowan, Wayne, Tyrrell and Washington Counties and retired while teaching in Creswell. She and her husband were committed educators and have provided the funding of the William J. and Doris M. Nichols Scholarship to a deserving student at Columbia High School since 1999.
She was a member of the Columbia Missionary Baptist Church where she served as WMU Director and was a long-time member of Homemaker’s Extension in Tyrrell County.
Funeral Services will be held at Columbia Missionary Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Thursday. Dr. Jeff Crabtree, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Azalea Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are a nephew, George William Ray, Jr. of Raleigh; special cousins, Don Morris and wife, JoAnne, of Hertford, N.C., and Ray Millikin and wife, Paulette, of Bozeman, Mont.
