Mr. Robert Sprouse, Sr., age 81, a resident of Pantego, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and will be conducted by Dr. J. Wayne Ellis. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery. His grandsons, Ricky Sprouse, David Sprouse, Philip Peachey, Eric Sprouse, Bruce Hardison and Mason Clayton Sprouse, Jr. will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Sprouse was born in Augusta County, Virginia, to the late Pearl and Lucy Harlowe Sprouse. On Feb. 13, 1947, he married Mary Jane Simmons who preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1994. He was a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ. Mr. Sprouse was employed as a mechanic with Coastal Lumber Company where he retired in 1996. He enjoyed working on cars and trucks, woodworking and building swings.
He is survived by four daughters, Betty Sue Russ of Pantego, Patricia Ann Sprouse of Bath, Joanie Hardison of Jamesville, Patricia Trueslowe of Stauton, Virginia; six sons, Lee Sprouse of Laurinburg, Robert Sprouse, Jr. of Belhaven, Boyd Sprouse of Bath, Benny Sprouse of Chocowinity, Kenny Sprouse of Belhaven, Johnny Sprouse of Manteo; one brother Emmanuel “Mutt” Sprouse of Craigsville, Virginia; 25 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, Clayton Sprouse, William Sprouse, Cary Sprouse and one grandson, Jeffrey Hardison.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and other times at the home of Robert Sprouse, Jr., 78 Hubs Rec Road, Belhaven.
