Barbara Eaton Swindell passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010. She was the daughter of Hattie Waters Eaton and Robert Sherman Eaton, who preceded her in death. Barbara was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe; two brothers, Charlie (Jr.) Swindell, and Grady Holmes Eaton.
She is survived by two sisters, Marie Eaton Woolard of Washington and Dorothy Eaton Daversa of Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Barbara Jo Payne and son-in-law, Wiley Payne of Plymouth.
Miss Barbara, as she was known by many children, spent more that 50 years loving and nurturing children as a baby-sitter and in the nursery at First Baptist Church. She was a surrogate grandmother to many and loved by them all. She was also the “Avon Lady” to hundreds of customers—she loved them all. She loved her First Baptist Church family, and they loved her. AND Miss Barbara loved her Carolina Tarheels! She will be missed, but we will meet again.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Hagwood and Rev. Shelley Varner. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church sanctuary and other times from the home of her daughter, Barbara Jo, 1102 E. Main St., Plymouth.
