Dr. J. Stewart Whitmore, MD, 85, a resident of Pamlico River Drive, Pamlico Plantation, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center. A private interment will be held at the family plot in Kansas City at a later date.
Dr. Whitmore was born on Oct. 25, 1925, in St. Louis, Mo., son of the late John Stewart Whitmore and Esther Yeager Whitmore. He graduated High School from Webster Groves in St. Louis, Mo., and Westminster College in the V12 program. He attended medical school at Washington University of St. Louis and later married the former Bernice Parsons on June 11, 1949. Together they moved to Pennsylvania where he served his internship at Pennsylvania Presbyterian Hospital. He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Indianapolis at Kessler Air Force base for two and a half years, where he studied Radiology. He then did a Radiology residency in Indianapolis and later practiced Radiology in Kansas City for 32 years. His greatest accomplishment was establishing a free-standing Radiology Oncology facility there.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Jessica W. Pouppirt of Clementon, N.J., and Susan W. Gray of Seattle, Wa.; one brother, Richard Whitmore of Hilton Head, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Andrew Pouppirt, Elliot Gray, Lindsey Pouppirt, and Nichole Pouppirt. He was preceded in death by one son, Jay Stewart Whitmore.
