Mr. Albert M. Stephens, 84, a resident of 304 Beech Lane, Washington, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at his home. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at Alligood Church of God officiated by Pastor Phillip Jethro. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to the funeral hour at the church.
Pallbearers will be Milton Bennett, Lloyd Edwards, Mike Harrell, Ken Harris, John Toler and Larry Woolard. Honorary Pallbearers are Leon Davidson, Jesse Jones and Carl Paramore.
Mr. Stephens was born Oct. 9, 1926, the son of the late Melton Ward Stephens and Alma Merck Stephens. He served his country in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Italy during WW II. Mr. Stephens married Betty Hope on March 19, 1944, who survives. He had earned his Masters Degree in Education and Doctorate Degree in Religion. Mr. Stephens was a former Pastor of Washington 15th Street Church of God and served a total of 40 years in ministry. He served as Superintendent of the Southwestern Indian Ministry in New Mexico. Mr. Stephens was a member of Alligood Church of God in Washington.
Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife Betty H. Stephens, two daughters, Diane S. Westmoreland and husband Austin of Sumter, S.C. And Melita S. Cooper and husband Michael of Oxnard, Calif.; a son Albert M. Stephens and wife Martha of Mt. Holly; seven grandchildren, April Collins, Michelle Bourhill, Austin Westmoreland, Jr., Amanda Jones, Betty Cooper, A.M. Stephens III , Michael Cooper, Jr. and nine great-grandchildren. He was precede in death by a brother Ray Stephens.
