Mr. Gervis Elwood Sadler, 86, of 20965 U.S. Highway 264, Swan Quarter, died at his home on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, after an extended illness.
Born in Lake Landing Township of Hyde County, Aug. 8, 1924, he was the son of the late Herbert L. and Katie Zerola Midgette Sadler.
He attended the former Swan Quarter School and was married to the former Evelyn Swindell who survives.
An avid hunter, he was a member of Hyde County Waterfowl Association and was inducted into the association’s Hall of Fame in 2001. A great supporter of local schools and youth, he was instrumental in getting the first activity bus for Mattamuskeet School and was an active member of Soule United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, in Soule United Methodist Church. Pastor Jerald Craddock and Steve Bryan will officiate and burial will follow in Soule Cemetery.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Tony Sadler and his wife, Laurie of Manteo; two daughters, Linda S. Smith and her husband, James of Kernersville, and Dana S. Miller and her husband, Allan of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, O.E. Sadler of Swan Quarter and H.L. Sadler, Jr. of Fairfield; two sisters, Edith S. Pugh of Lake Landing and Bettie S. Spencer of Engelhard; four grandchildren and five great-grandchldren.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to Community Home Care and Hospice, P.O. Box 130, Engelhard, NC 27824 or Soule United Methodist Church, c/o Sandra Tunnell, Treas. 809 Main St., Swan Quarter, NC 27885.
The family will receive friends at Soule United Methodist Church on Tuesday evening, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and other times at the home.
