Leona W. Cullipher

Mrs. Leona Waters Cullipher, age 82, a resident of 453 Croatan St., Belhaven, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011 at her home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven, conducted by Pastor David Pierce and Jody Webb. Burial will follow in Belhaven Community Cemetery.

The following will serve as pallbearers: David  Butcher, Roger Brinn, Randy Rouse, Jack Jordan, Dennis Morris, and Rich Robinson.

Mrs. Cullipher was born in Beaufort County on June 15, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Earl Bonner Waters and Bertha Keech Waters. Mrs. Cullipher was a retired licensed practical nurse. She received her training at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and worked in Winter Haven, Fla., and Belhaven. Mrs. Cullipher was a member of Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Head of Women’s Missions for many years, and worked with children in the AWANA program. She was a charter member of the BMBC quilting group who donated many of the quilts to Kennedy Childrens Home. She was a volunteer at Pungo District Hospital and in the community thrift shops.

On June 16, 1945, she married John A. Cullipher, Jr. who preceded her in death in 1990.

Mrs. Cullipher is survived by her children, Betty McCullough and husband, Neal, Edith Guy and husband, Nelson all of Belhaven, John Cullipher III and wife, Andrea of Lakeland, Fla., Edna LaMaster and husband, Jerry of Valdese, N.C.; brother, Gene Earl Waters of Belhaven; sister, Frances Carawan of Scranton; four grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Cullipher was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Waters Bridgeman.

The family received friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven and other times at the homes of her daughters.
