Evans named top firefighter

Ada Evans must be doing something right as a firefighter.
Evans, a firefighter with the Clark’s Neck Volunteer Fire Department, has been named Firefighter of the Year for Beaufort County and Pitt County. That makes sense, considering that the Clark’s Neck Fire Department serves areas in the two counties.
“Evans has shown tireless efforts in improving the Clark’s Neck Volunteer Fire Department to better the community in which she lives in. She has taken the responsibility in coordinating the efforts in her department with pre-plans for the district,” reads a press release. “Evans has the leading role in overseeing the Junior Firefighter training program and makes sure each junior member meets the department requirements and does not fall shy of what is expected of them. Evans ensures everyone is safe and working safely while on an emergency scene or training.”
Taking seriously her assignment as the department’s safety officer, Evans, a first lieutenant in the department, attends numerous training sessions to broaden and enhance her understanding of her assignment and its responsibilities. This year, Evans travels to McDowell Fire College in Marion to further gain knowledge and skills she will need to keep her fellow firefighters safe when they respond to calls.
Although not a member of the department’s board of directors, Evans attended all board meetings in 2010. Because the department serves areas in two counties, Evans attends as many of the meetings of the Beaufort County and Pitt County fire association meetings as possible.
“When there are outside schools going on in the state, Evans is ready to go and learn more so she can do her job professionally and safe,” reads the release.
Evans responded to 86 percent of the department’s calls in 2010. She tallied more than 250 hours of training during that years. Evans participated in fire-prevention activities at two schools and a Kids Expo designed to educate children in proper fire-prevention techniques.
“Evans is quick to step up to help and participate in preparation for parades and other activities to share with the community Clark’s Neck’s desire to serve our community and protect it to the best of our ability,” reads the release.
Evans is married to Jimmy Evans and they have one son, Trey. They live in the Clark’s Neck community of Washington.
The Clark’s Neck Volunteer Fire Department meets the third Monday of each month at the Wharton Station Ruritan Club outside Washington. Anyone interested in joining the department is encouraged to attend a department meeting or contact a department member.
