James “Jim” B. McMullan, 86, of Beaufort, formerly of Washington, died Monday, March 7, 2011, at home.

Mr. McMullan was born Dec. 8, 1924, in Washington to Harry and Pattie Baugham McMullan. He attended Washington City Schools, Chapel Hill City Schools, Porter Military Academy in Charleston, S.C. and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his undergraduate and law degrees. Mr. McMullan served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theater for several years before being honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant (J.G.). Jim practiced law first in Raleigh and then in Washington, N.C., where he served as City Attorney for some 35 years before retiring from practicing law in 1993. He served as president of the Beaufort County Bar Association, Second Judicial Bar Association, Washington Kiwanis Club, Farmers and Businessmens’ Mutual Fire Insurance and also served as Secretary of the Historic Bath Commission.

His memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the rector, the Rev. John Carlisto, and the associate rector, the Rev. Paul Head, officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, with the Rev. Kevin Johnson, pastor of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Young McMullan of Beaufort; Son, Landon Hill McMullan of Washington; Daughter, Elizabeth M. Rollyson of Warner Robins, Ga.; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, his first wife, Bettie Hill McMullan, a son, James B. McMullan, Jr., sisters Mildred McMullan Rumley and Patsy McMullan Old, and a brother, Harry McMullan Jr., precede him in death.

The family will receive friends at the home on Friday, March 11, 2011, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and also on Sunday, March 13, 2011 following the graveside service at the home of Mary Tucker McMullan Tally, 420 Riverside Drive, Washington.
