GREENVILLE — Nine Pirates recorded at least one hit and a trio of hurlers recorded a three-hit shutout as East Carolina (21-8) took the season series from Elon (19-12) 7-0 Wednesday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. For the Pirates it was their sixth shutout of the season and second-straight at home against Elon dating back to last season’s 8-0 win.

Just 24 hours after suffering a heartbreaking loss at in-state rival N.C. State on Tuesday, ECU wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard pushing across its first run in the third inning. Tim Younger singled to right field before Ben Fultz reached on a bunt single back to the pitcher for Corey Thompson, who sent a hard shot back up the middle scoring Younger from second and giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Kevin Brandt (3-0) picked up the win in relief tossing three scoreless innings with a strikeout. True freshman Austin Chrismon made his second start of the season scattering three hits over four innings with three walks and a strikeout. Joseph Hughes closed the game working a perfect two innings with five strikeouts.

Thomas Girdwood (2-3) suffered the loss allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits in six innings. Brad MacHaffie was touched for a pair of runs on three hits in 1.1 innings with three punch outs and Greg Amorosso tossed the final two-thirds of the eighth.

Chris Gosik pushed across the Pirates second run of the game with a groundout RBI to second in the fourth pushing the lead to 2-0.

John Wooten reached on a single and moved to third when Jack Reinheimer reached on an error setting up Gosik’s first RBI of the game.

In the sixth, ECU used three doubles to extend its lead to 4-0. Zach Wright doubled to start the frame and with one out Reinheimer and Gosik laced back-to-back doubles to cap the scoring.

Fultz and Trent Whitehead each homered in the seventh putting the game out of reach at 7-0. Fultz led off with a solo shot to right-center for his second round-tripper of the season. After a pitching change, Thompson reached on the second Elon error of the night before Whitehead sent a 0-1 offering to right-center.

Elon left six runners on base and its only threat came in the top of the third when Chrismon worked out of a bases loaded jam. With one out, Eric Serra walked, Jake Luce singled through the right side and Niko Fraser loaded the bases on another walk. Chrismon got Alex Swim to reach on a fielder’s choice where John Wooten threw home to retire Serra and Neal Pritchard grounded out to third to end the threat.

On the night ECU recorded 12 hits, its 12th double-digit hit game of the season. Fultz, Reinheimer and Younger led the way with two hits each and nine Pirates recorded a hit on the night.

The Pirates will be back in action on Friday, April 8 at 6 p.m. (EST) when they play host to No. 22 Rice in game one of a three-game Conference USA series.
